Weekend Recap

Monday, September 29, 2014

This past week I went to my annual doctor’s appointment. Let’s just say marriage has been good to me, since I’ve packed on quite a few unnecessary pounds. So with my motivation at its utmost high, my hubby and I decided to make a trip to Academy. Because what helps your motivation more than new workout clothes, right? Can I just ask though, when did running shorts become compression shorty shorts? I’m not about to show my goodies to the entire neighborhood now. Just wondering.

With that aside, Chad and I had a coffee date Saturday morning at our new favorite coffee shop in Collinsville and then ran into Owasso to grab materials for our Halloween costumes this year! I’m so excited that it will be our first Halloween to pass out candy in our house.

I am also so excited that it’s football season, don’t get me wrong though, I’m not there to watch the game, it’s more or less for the yummy food and girl talk while the guys watch the game. Great time to catch up with everyone especially since one of our friends is an assistant high school coach. Go Ironmen!!

Sunday I woke up with a massive headache that lingered most of the day.  When it finally passed I finished the laundry and actually put it all away, which is a huge improvement in our household. It normally stays on the ground until Saturday, please no judgment. I also got in the baking mood and made 2 quiches for our work week while Chad was out in the garage.

While in the middle of making the quiches Chad comes in telling me to get his BB gun and to not come out to the garage, ummm this can not be good. After a while he comes in all excited and tells me there was a mouse in the garage and he killed it making it his first kill for hunting season. Now I have to worry about mice around the house on top of everything else, goodness.

Recipe - Pumpkin Dump Cake

Thursday, September 25, 2014

I decided to try out a new pumpkin recipe last week for our work’s food day. Can I just say I love food day at work, it’s a great time to try out new recipes and not having to worry about eating the whole thing, self-control is a real struggle.

So in celebration of everything pumpkin season, here’s to our new Thanksgiving dessert.

Pumpkin Dump Cake

1 box yellow cake mix

1 can (15 oz) pumpkin puree

1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk

3 large eggs

½ cup brown sugar

1 cup white sugar

Wedding Wednesday- Wedding Shoes

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

I found some bedazzled shoes on etsy that I fell in love with as soon as I saw them but wowza were they expensive. And I’ll be the first to admit that me and my frugal self couldn’t stand the thought of paying over $300 for a pair of shoes. But I was bound and determined to have some for my wedding day, so I went out to find a pair of wedges (since we were going to have an outdoor wedding). I ended up finding every other shoe in America besides a nude patent leather wedge. The next weekend I made my usual week stop at TJ Maxx and just happened to pop into the shoe section. What do you know I found a pair of nude patent leather BCBG shoes in my size, oh TJ how I love you. My next stop was the craft store; I picked up some E600 glue and some rhinestones and pearls to put on the shoes and took my supplies and went home! Side note: craft stores always have sales going on so make sure you only purchase these items if they are on sale or you have a coupon because more than likely they will be on sale the following week.
Supplies:

Shoes – patent leather is the best since it’s a clean surface
Rhinestones/pearls, fabric, whatever you want to put on your masterpiece
E6000 glue
Toothpick, flat stick, tweezers
Ribbon
Neck massager – optional

I started by sticking the bigger rhinestones where I wanted them, I ended up picking up an “N” to put on one side of the shoe to make it personal so I put that on first. Then I planned out my other designs for the shoes, I used the flat stick to spread the glue on the shoe in small portions. I put my designs where I wanted them and then filled the other places with smaller rhinestones(this is where the tweezers and toothpick come into play if you need them).  I continued this all the way around the shoe.

Warning: This is a long project and your neck will start to hurt. You may also make several trips to the craft store.

After you are completed and trotted in front of the mirror a few times to look at just how much better your legs look with bedazzled shoes on, you are ready to add the finishing touches.
I got some ribbon out of my craft closet and tied a bow; I then glued it to the back of the shoe and glued a bigger rhinestone on top of the bow.

Everyone (the girls) loved my shoes when they finally came out for their grand entrance. I mean who wouldn’t love these shoes.
I am so in love with these shoes that they are currently on my dresser because well I mean, they are a piece of art J

Couples Wedding Shower

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

Yesterday we celebrated 6 months of marriage bliss and today I’m sharing a look back to one of our wedding showers.
One of my dear friends threw us a beautiful backyard BBQ couple’s shower last fall. Everything was outside and we could not have asked for a better day. We decided to do a BBQ style theme with hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, etc. It was hosted at her parents’ house since they had all the equipment for this fabulous get-to-together.
(Look how small Karl use to be, tear)

Instead of cake we selected a s’mores bar, because nothing says fall more than s’mores J. I LOVED this I bought all different kinds of candy including Reese’s, Andres’ mints, Hersey’s cookies & crème, Caramel filled bars, and of course the usual. I even had this cute little menu out on the table for people to make their own signature s’more.

It was very laid-back and chill which is exactly what I wanted. No games, just good friends getting together eating and drinking.

Weekend Recap

Monday, September 22, 2014

I am loving this weather. I can finally stay outside longer than 5 minutes without sweating all over and having to change my clothes 10 times a day. Chad came home from working out and said there was a "Taste of Collinsville" going on so we went back to Collinsville downtown and experienced all the tasty treats while listening to a few bands going on up and down the streets. I sure do love my small town.

This past weekend we went to watch my brother-in-law compete in his Crossfit competition in downtown Tulsa. Let me tell you nothing gets you more motivated to start working out than seeing all those skinny minnies running around.

But of course I'll start working out this week. Karl and I were super tired on Sunday from all the activities.

Coffee Table

Friday, September 19, 2014

I found a barn door wall décor at our local craft store and fell in love, not for a wall décor but to turn it into a coffee table. I took it home and immediately starting taking the metal pieces off. Then I ran to Lowes and got wood stain and paint (I’m so indecisive that I think I stood in the aisle for a good hour just trying to decide on color). I then went to the lumber store and got the legs since Lowes can’t cut a 4x4 on their machine. I started staining the legs and the wall décor and then painted the metal pieces to set to dry. The next day we glued the legs to the wall décor I used gorilla glue, which I got a little carried away and used a tad too much. Covered the glue coming out of the cracks with left over stain and called it good. Finally we put the metal pieces back on and moved it inside the house. I absolutely love it and always get a ton of compliments on it. What do you think?

Wedding Folder

Wednesday, September 17, 2014

This is a defiant essential and a life safer for the day of. I used mine all the time and carried it around with me everywhere. You never know when you’ll get a phone call or need to make a phone call for that matter.

The following is how I organized my folder and what worked best for me

1.       Monthly Checklist

I found a few checklists on the internet that I used throughout the year of our engagement to make sure I was on track with everything and not waiting until the last minute to get started with certain important items

2.       Packing Checklist (for the night before the wedding)

This was a lifesaver, since our venue was about an hour away from our house it was very important that we did not forget anything. The month’s leading up to the wedding I made checklists and instructions for how I wanted things placed (I even drew maps of the venue, for the people that were helping us out that day with setting up). I used the instructions to make my master packing list for the day before. I even made sure I included trash bags, pens, scissors, and all the little stuff you don’t think about until you need them.

Since we were leaving right after our wedding for a hotel and then off to our honeymoon, I made instructions for the people who were dropping things off at our house. For example, the code to our alarm system and which door to enter in at, etc.

3.       Ceremony

Like mentioned above, I had a list of where I wanted everything to be placed. This way it cured my OCD and helped out the workers for the day of(win win). I also made individual check-lists for the ceremony and reception site.

For the Ceremony section of my folder, I included the music that was to be played and when it should be played, the procession information including which usher would walk which family member down the aisle, the ceremony timeline, and the quotes that were to be read during the ceremony.

4.       Reception

I made a map of the reception; we had it in a barn so I labeled each stall by a number and then organized my set-up and checklist’s by the number listed on the map. The weather didn’t corporate with us this day so my numbers where a little off due to us using plan B instead of plan A. If you are doing this way beforehand it’s a good idea to include both plan A and Plan B.

5.       Wedding Party/Attire

This section was one of the most important, I mean we are dealing with family members and men(sorry guys). I had a sheet for the girls and a sheet for the guys. I wrote down everyone’s phone numbers and their outfit sizes. I wanted to make sure items were not being mixed up in the chaos of the day.

6.       Vendors

This is where I kept all the contracts of my different vendors along with a sheet that had their phone number, day of contact, when deposits were due, etc. So important to ask each vendor when their final payment is due since some of them do not include it on their contracts. Also include how much you have already paid for the down payment. I had amazing vendors but I have read horror stories about people trying to get more out of you.

7.       Checklist/List of Vendors

Here I kept my master list of vendors with their phone numbers and day of contact. When having your final meeting with your vendors always make sure you ask who the day of contact will be and a phone number for the person. Just in case they get lost, etc.

8.       Misc.

In this section I kept all my receipts, including my dress, bridesmaid’s dresses, invitations, etc. You never know when you might need to order extra invitations or envelopes and you want to make sure you order the same ones as before!

Staying organized during wedding planning can seem a little over excessive sometimes but in the end you will be so glad you were!

Dinner for new Mommy & Daddy

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

About a year ago almost all of our friends decided to get pregnant around the same time. I was raised with my mom always bringing meals over to couples who just had babies or families who just lost loved ones, etc. I remember being there with my mom and looking at the families faces when we walked in to deliver the food. It was an expression of overwhelming thank you on their faces, the look of “Thank you Jesus” we didn’t have to order pizza again, or wonder what we had in the pantry to whip up with a screaming baby on our hands. I couldn’t wait to carry on this tradition. Plus, it was a chance for me to hold and rock the whittle ones. One of my staples to bring to families is a Chicken and Rice casserole. Super delicious and lasts a while with left overs. I always try and pack a side, in this case I brought rolls, easiest is the rhodes rolls since they are already in a tin container. And of course dessert, cookies are fast and easy to eat especially since their busy with a newborn. Another thing I try and bring is granola bars for the mommy. Also, you can’t forget the puppies or older children in the home. For the puppies I bring either a bone or treats and for the older children in the household, coloring books, reading books, and/or toys, are always a good idea.  Lastly, for this occasion I packed pacifier wipes and Destin, because those always come in handy.

Things to remember:

 ·        Bring food in throw away containers; Dollar Tree is a great place to purchase these
·         Be conscious of dietary needs especially breast feeding mommies, nothing spicy
·         Be time conscious as well. New parents are trying to figure things out and get the baby put on a schedule
·         If you think that the family will be getting a lot of food from other people make them a freezer meal with instructions
·         Always label everything with instructions. Heating temperatures and amount of time to stick it in the oven.
·   When cooking food for another family cook an extra one for your family!

Weekend Recap

Monday, September 8, 2014

We are so blessed to have such amazing friends and a great support system around us. This past Friday we had some of our friends over for dinner, and since she is one of my biggest followers, she asked me to share my mashed potato recipe that I made for them on Friday.

I absolutely love mashed potatoes I could eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is definitely my comfort food when I’m feeling down and my go to side dish for dinner parties. Since you can make them the night before and then just pop them in the oven right before the guests arrive, they sure do make for a great timesaver. Especially when you’re throwing a dinner party every second leading up to your guests walking through that door is valuable. I tried Pioneer Woman’s mashed potato recipe a few years ago and have not gone back or felt guilty about it. (Recipe here)

After dinner we had a special visit from Chad’s brother, his wife, and their daughter. They had just moved from Hawaii to California and are in town for a few weeks before he has to report back to his unit. We are so excited about this move since they will be closer to home and are looking forward to the visits out to California.

Saturday I went to a women’s seminar at our church and then we went to a couple’s wedding shower.  A cold front came through on Friday night making it feel a lot like fall, so in celebration I decided to break out a sweater and boots for the first time this season!

After the wedding shower we went to go see Chad’s cousin’s baby. He is the happiest mellow baby, which makes baby fever at an all-time high every time I get to see that little man.

Saturday night I whipped out the sewing machine and attempted to make baby shorts, well after 2 failed attempts I put the project down (more like threw it down) and went to bed.

Sunday was a new series at our church that really spoke to Chad and I. We sometimes get wrapped up in what everyone else is doing that we forget to be grateful for what we have. After church we traveled to Chad’s grandmother’s house for her famous tacos. This woman is so talented and I have so much to learn from her.

We are so blessed to have family so close to us that sometimes we take it for granted.

I hope everyone has a great week!

Anniversary Dinner

Friday, September 5, 2014

My in-laws were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary and we really wanted to do something special for them. I ended up finding an old wedding picture of them cutting their cake. I knew I wanted to replicate it and surprise them when we had them over for dinner. After dinner, I brought out the cake. To my surprise they knew exactly what it was, I was shocked. The cake looked amazing and I couldn’t be happier with the way everything turned out. Funny thing, my mother-in-law didn’t even know how long they had been married. She had to think about how old her oldest son was and then count from there. Guess time flies when your in love.

Weekend Recap

Tuesday, September 2, 2014

Every month we try and set time out to have a date; just the two of us. Whenever we went to pre-marital counseling the therapist advised us to both write down date ideas and every month pick from the list and go on a date! I absolutely loved this idea and will share more about our dates and adventures later on but this month was probably my favorite yet. The date read to have afternoon drinks but we took it a little bit further than that. We decided to explore an area in our local town where we had never been before. Our adventure started at a bar and ended at a restaurant called “Hey Mambo”, little did we know it was an Italian place not a Mexican restaurant.  We had so much fun exploring our town and trying out new/different places to eat together. Here are a few pictures from our date.

We absolutely love Oklahoma and everything it has to offer. Sometimes it's hard to get stuck in the familiar so it's nice to get out and explore places we hadn't been before.
